Flick Picks 4/30

New this week
This week Stephen Soderbergh introduces new action star and former MMA fighter Gina Carano in Haywire. She's a double-crossed agent who needs to use all of her fighting skills to get away from those who wish to cause her harm. It also stars Michael Fassbender, Ewan McGregor, Bill Paxton, Antonio Banderas and Michael Douglas and is available in DVD and blu-ray.

Martin Scorcese's tribute to the quiet Beatle, George Harrison: Living in the Material World, comes out on DVD this week. It features home movies, interviews and lots of music!

If you're looking for a clever take on the courtroom drama try the USA series Suits, in which a corporate law firm's newly hired associate might be lacking a law degree but turns out to be quite the legal idiot savant.

Finally, here's another new Masterpiece Classic release this week, with a dark take on Dickens' The Mystery of Edwin Drood.

One you might have missed
Michelle Williams won a Golden Globe for her portrayal of My Week With Marilyn, a film that takes place during the filming of The Prince and the Showgirl. Why not check out the real thing? We've got The Prince and the Showgirl and it is free to check out for a week.

The Joy of Aardman
Aardman Animations' new film The Pirates! Band of Misfits has been getting fantastic reviews and it's no surprise. Aardman has been making clever movies that are fun for the whole family for years. We've got a number of Aardman films at the library that are worth checking out. Flushed Away, Wallace and Gromit: The Curse of the Were-Rabbit and our collections of Wallace and Gromit and Shaun the Sheep shorts are not just for the kids!


Flick Picks 4/23

New DVD highlights this week at the Glencoe Library: 
The big blockbuster this week is Contraband, starring Mark Wahlberg as a former smuggler who gets dragged back in to his former trade after his family is threatened. Place your hold on the DVD or the blu-ray.

Also in demand this week is the ghost story The Innkeepers, starring Sara Paxton and Kelly McGillis.

Masterpiece Theatre lovers will want to get their hands on the adaptation of Sebastian Faulks' epic love story Birdsong.

A little bit off the beaten path is the HBO movie Cinema Verite, about the making of the groundbreaking 1973 An American Family series. It stars Diane Lane, Tim Robbins and James Gandolfini.

You also won't want to miss Palestinian director Elia Suleiman's semi-autobiographical The Time That Remains, which examines the Arab-Israeli conflict.
